"SOI-Music Festival from BKK" is one of the most keen interest three days (Oct. 29, 30, 31 at AOYAMA CAY etc.) avant-music festivals with an aim to encourage cultural exchanges between Japan / Thailand, featuring the artists such as Spank Happy & Buffalo Daughter from Japan, presented by "SOI-Music", which are the artist collectives just had the same style party supported by Cornelius, Spank Happy along with cutting edge artists from Thailand in Sep 2004, as an offshoot of "THAI FOOD FESTIVAL" at YOYOGI PARK, Japan in early May every year.
Right from first, the things come to my head were, maybe same like yours, if there was proper Electronic music scene in Thailand like us. But then just having tasted it once, i was easily impressed in those funny and uniquely eclectic scene and willing to introduce here.
So let me begin with...why the Thai Electronic music scene stands in so unique place at the moment. From what Ms. Suzueri, a Japanese vocalist / creator ( and also the member of the three-piece-band lead by a Thai creator, Cliquetpar), I suppose there's a so-called "Thainism" specially affecting on the music, which I'll let you know right after this (excuse myself for any definitions feel you uncomfortable though). Thai people are said, *Copy anything they love *Just rough (don't mind even if the design are quite different from as it should be!??) *Fall in and out of love quickly *Love parties just to get drunk and go freak. In addition to the above four, *Enjoy any cultural import not only from US, UK but also from Japan and whatever. *Only the rich can make music as all musical equipments are so expensive (same prices as in Japan or more although their cost of living is one third of the Japanese). These social and economic environments have also set spurs to the uniqueness in the course of evolution.
Then I guess artists from the country follow your attention so I'll have some here. First, Cliquetpar and his band (above mentioned) with Japanese artists, Toshiaki Sudou on drum, Suzueri on vocal. Especially, the solo-project from Cliquetpar sounds so stunning (!), rather called "BAROQUE meets BREAKCORE", complicated harmony & structure with rockin' dynamism in his sound core. And there's an artist called "FUTON", whose live performances are just incredible. We'd already set them in the first place when COM.A. gave them a rave review at the Japanese BREAKCORE event by ROMZ. However it was just beyond my expectation(!), somehow what I would like to style "B-LINE-GAY ELECTRO"!!! What is more, Stylish Nonsense has been bringing up their Thai roots music with lounge ELECTRONICA equipments...there seem to be so many curious bands in Bangkok, growing up with their "little off ELECTRONICA sounds (in a good way)" besides the scene at Japan, Europe and US has been almost turned down.
Ok, I could say some cheesy bands still around the refreshings. But, after all the ELECTRONICA scene has gone to seriousness or deadly much technological things at our side of the world, you won't be able to take your eyes off the new geeky island of ELECTRONICA music buzzing around Bangkok!!!
